As both teams make final preparations for this season’s Army Navy match on Saturday a quick look over the shoulder to when it all began. Both the Royal Navy Rugby Union and the Army Rugby Union were formed in 1906. In February 1907 the two Unions played each other in a match at Queen’s Club. The Army with their ten internationals in the team were expected to win. Navy Rugby by Alligin Photography today publishes the second in its series about the first Army Navy match including the original match programme, the announcements of Navy Caps and details of US Portsmouth’s unbeaten run at the time – did it contribute?. Having already published extensive match details from 1878 it now publishes details of the first game between the Unions. The third in the series, not due this season, will look at the battle that took place to move the game to Twickenham and also to allow ratings to be selected for the Navy Team.
