Chief Petty Officer Nick Bartlett Royal Navy captained the Royal Navy for the last four years of his playing career, from 2002 – 2005, where his leadership was often fully tested as the Navy team attempted to keep pace with the ever more professional Army outfit. At the end of the 2002/03 season he was awarded the Royal Navy Rugby Union Cossack Sword as player of the year.

In a long serving rugby career he toured with the Navy on six occasions taking in South Africa twice (1996, 2006), first as a player and then as a coach, New Zealand twice (1991, 2003) including captaining the victorious 2003 Commonwealth Cup side, Australia in 2000 when the Navy first retained the Commonwealth Cup and Canada in 1998. However his first tour with the Royal Navy was not rugby related but involved being deployed to the Gulf War in 1990.

Though playing at a time when first the RAF and then the Army were the most dominant Nick’s eleven Combined Services’ caps show that he was a player respected and valued by all involved with Service rugby. In CS colours he took on three touring International teams namely Argentina, Romania and the Netherlands. Alongside his CS honours he was part of the 2001 Inter Service winning team for the Navy and played in two successful Commonwealth Cups and coached the team to a third success as forwards coach in the 2006/07 season. However he also enjoyed success at Navy Command level with both Plymouth and the Fleet Air.

Away from Navy rugby Nick enjoyed a successful career with civilian rugby including captaining the Lydney side of 2000 that took on the might of Saracens, packed with internationals, in the fourth round of the RFU Knockout Cup. On leaving the Navy Nick remained with Lydney and is now DoR of his home time club.
