With its inclusion in the Rio Olympics (2016) the VIIs version of rugby union finally confirmed itself as a global sport in its own right. Before that World Rugby's annual World Sevens Series, that is played around the World, had already showcased the sport with a number of countries emerging to challenge the more established tier 1 countries.
