The Fleet Air Arm hosted RN West to a home fixture at HMS Drake – right in the middle of HMNB Plymouth – work that out as home advantage. Both sides had won their opening matches, the Fleet Air Arm away to the Royal Marines and RN West away to RN East.
It was a hard fought game and although U23 preparations for tomorrow’s RN U23 v Army U23 match took a number of players away there was still plenty of talent on show. Navy cap Aaron Hunt (FAA) looks to curtail a promising RN West attack.
Kye Beasley (right) showed his commitment to the Fleet Air Arm cause by playing the night after his appearance for the Combined Services v Barbarians match.
RN West certainly took the game to the Fleet Air Arm who were clear pre match favourites.
But despite some powerful runs by Navy Number 8, Ian Cooper, who has clearly worked on his aggressive facial expressions, it was the FAA who sneaked the win 32-29
Ryan Cox, with half back partner, John Clay, ensured that though RN West probably shaded possession it was the FAA who used it most wisely.
And in FAA stalwart, Sumo Thpmpson, they had enough experience and running power to sneak the win. The Fleet Air Arm sit out the next round whilst RN West host the raiders from the North who scored four tries in the last eight minutes to win their opening game against RN East.
