Shark’s Results Sure Sign of Progress

Sharks step up performance at Rugby Rocks London. Saxon 7s and Carmarthen Warriors find out first hand how their improvement continues.

The Navy Sharks can be very well pleased with their performance at Richmond over the weekend where they narrowly missed out in the final to Filton.  Drawn in a pool of the Men’s Open competition with Soy Galacticos and Saxons 7s the Sharks would be able to test their progress.  In Manchester 2 weeks ago, Saxons had pipped the Sharks by a single score and were the first match of the day.

Ian Cooper, captain, had an early opportunity to measure progress agains the Saxons.  3 tries from Coopz was backed up by four tries shared between Navy flyhalf Nathan Huntley and Senior XV squad member Kyle Wood.  The 50 – 10 win was a marker of intent.

The first hit out was backed up with a second comfortable victory over Soy Galacticos (38-19) and with a third match bye the Sharks were worthy pool winners.

At last season’s West Country sevens they stumbled in their first quarter final but at Richmond they showed far greater poise. Readingensians were able to hold the Sharks to 12-12 early on before the Sharks pulled clear with 24  unanswered points.  Loz Blackburn enjoying an excellent tournament scoring the tries along with Tom Davies
The semi final was a return match with the well organised and talented Carmarthen Warriors side.  The Sharks will have remembered how the well drilled welsh team had exposed them last season.  However a Nathan Huntley try and another by Navy winger Greg Welling allowed the Sharks to sneak a narrow but deserved 20-10 victory over a Warriors side containing some big name Welsh Sevens specialists.

The Sharks faced Filton Old Boys in the Mens Open Final and had the best possible start reaching the interval with a 19-5 lead.  However they couldn’t hold off the Filton Fight back and had to settle for second palace with three unanswered Filton scores giving them the title 26-19.

Jay Samuel had another good tournament and was another who was talent spotted at the Navy Rugby Sevens (seen in Devonport colours last season).

Next up are the Navy Rugby Sevens which have been moved to Castle Cary RFC and are all day on Wednesday 5th June.  This is a fantastic opportunity for players to get noticed and start on the representative pathway.

For the Sharks they are in action at the West Country Sevens on the 15th June and Newquay Surf Sevens on 29th June where they will no doubt be looking to continue their progress.

The images used in the post are library images. Alligin Photography were not at Rugby Rocks. Best source of good sevens images are from Scrumpix.co.uk / http://www.anglo-welshimages.co.uk I believe AW Images were at Richmond and will no doubt load some images on their site when they have been processed.
