Sutherland Flies Flag for Fleet at Navy Sevens

Luke Dando lead a team from HMS Sutherland in the 2013 edition of Navy Sevens. The only ship in this year’s competition the ship’s former captain, Navy backrow Roger Readwin, would have been proud of their performance.

Though they were knocked out by a good Devonport Services team in the quarter finals HMS Sutherland can be proud of their performance in today’s Navy Sevens.

Devonport Services (red) proved to be a very physicals side.
and Sutherland soon found out that you needed to be fully committed in the tackle!
but contrary to the impression Luke gives in this image they all worked tirelessly for each other and if one tackle was broken they worked hard to get another man behind the ball.

Though much of the game was spent in defence when they did get the ball in the hands they looked to play with good shape and exploit space.

they were always looking for the off load out of the tackle.

however even the skills of Navy U23 player Sam Davies often found that the door marked space
was firmly closed by robust Devonport Services defence.

The final score was a 17-5 win for Devonport Services RFC but as ever it was good to see a ship doing so well.
