The Toughest Appointment

As Greg Wallace might say “Touch Judging doesn’t get tougher than this!”

Roger Baileff at last season’s Bristol v Cornish Pirates Semi Final.

Tonight Navy Referee, Roger Baileff, is on the line for what is probably as challenging appointment as exists in domestic English Rugby when Bedford Blues take on Newcastle Falcon in the Championship Final.  Why so challenging?  Think of the prize.  If Falcons, under Dean Richards stewardship win, then they are back in to the Premiership and all the potential rewards that can follow.  If the Blues win then perhaps not – hopefully not a repeat of the London Welsh saga!  However with a major trophy on the line they would love nothing more than to upset the form guide and topple the massive favourites, Newcastle.  It is therefore essential that they get off to a good start in the two legged final by winning at home this evening.  Luke Pearce, fresh from the Army Navy game is in the middle, and it is a fitting reward to an excellent season from Roger that he has been appointed as AR.
