The role of Royal Navy Selector has been filled by some of the greats of Navy Rugby and the way the position is almost mystically spoken about always filled me with intrigue. Navy Rugby by Alligin Photography has today published what I believe to be the best account of why the Royal Navy Rugby Union’s role of “The Sole Selector” achieved such a level of reverence and importance.
It is not a light read but the principle stand of Captain Brown when faced with a US Portsmouth resolution for selection by committee is certainly an interesting one for any former or aspiring Navy Selectors / Directors of Rugby
